  New floor at Rada Kirkovich
Rada Kirkovich orphanage is located in Plovdiv. One Heart Bulgaria has been so impressed with the wonderful care these children receive, despite their desperate circumstances. The orphanage Director, Ms. Yordanka Paunova, is dedicated to changing the lives of "her" children -- she would like to invite One Heart Bulgaria sponsors and donors to join with her in really making a difference.
  Rada Kirkovich Outside and Bedroom

One Heart Bulgaria already has a good relationship with Rada Kirkovich, thanks to One Heart Bulgaria field director, Nickolai Gavazov, who one year headed up a project to provide quilts through a local church congregation -- and that, was before he worked for One Heart Bulgaria! We would like to build on this friendly foundation and expand the support that Rada Kirkovich receives.

Several years ago this orphanage had a very talented group of singers who performed publicly. The group was sponsored by Bulgarian opera singer, Raina Kabaivanska. However, this sponsorship has expired. One Heart Bulgaria has been asked to hire Professor Svetla Stanilova from the Plovdiv Musical Academy as a music teacher to gather the group again because there is a good number of very talented boys and girls. OHB recently installed a new parquet floor in the performance hall of this facility. This would be a perfect place for these children to share their talents with the public. Our field director has estimated the salary for Professor Svetla to be around $104 - $112/month.

We are pleased to announce that our Kidney/Bedwetting Fund has been established with a donation of $3,360 from Scott & Kathy Stringham. These funds will provide medicines and medical care for the older children suffering with bedwetting problems.

Rada Kirkovich Projects

Music teacher: Cost: $104 - $112/month

Renovation of Study Room:  Cost: $5,000-$10,000.  Furniture, windows & doors, flooring, new plaster & paint (400 sq. ft.)

I Can Help at Home:  Cost: $4,000.  Food and appropriate containers for a 6 month period for 25 children who are considered “weekly boarders.”

8 are "half" orphans, and have either a mother or father to whom they can go for weekends and holidays
bullet
7 have parents who are mentally ill, but who are able to care for their children on weekends
bullet
6 have parents who are chronically ill
bullet
4 are "true" orphans, but have relatives or family friends they can visit on the weekends

The families/friends of these children have no financial resources and live in poor conditions, but it is in the best interest of the children to maintain these relationships and family ties. In order to help the children feel positive about their weekend experiences, Rada Kirkovich would like to provide each child with a "weekend package" of food. This will not only allay their fears about going hungry over the weekend, but it will also help the children feel that they are able to help provide for their families.

Children’s Advocate:  Cost: $2,700 for a 10 month contract, plus taxes and insurance. The salary for a specialist (without a teaching license) would be 350 leva ($270) per month, plus insurance and taxes.

An upcoming restructuring at Rada Kirkovich will include the development of six "apartments." Each will house up to nine children in a “family group.” In order for each group to receive adequate time and attention from the social worker assigned to the group, Rada Kirkovich would like to hire an additional specialist to assume the current administrative responsibilities of the social workers. This new development will enable the social workers to focus their attention on the children in their "family group." The Children’s Advocate would be required to:

bullet
Try to find/develop a relationship with the children's parents or relatives, if they have any
bullet
Help establish citizenship and governmental recognition for the children
bullet
Meet with existing families and help the parents make necessary appointments for consultation
bullet
Act as an advocate for the reconciliation of children with existing parents
bullet
Help the children make the transition into society
