Janet Lapray Petersen
is from Mendon, Utah where she and her husband raised eight children and enjoy their thirteen grandchildren. She has been involved with many humanitarian-aid projects for orphans in Romania, Croatia, Russia and Mexico. She has been involved with teaching children in both the private school sector and public education programs for over 20 years. She is delighted now to be of assistance to orphans in Bulgaria.
In the early 1990’s, when communism was being denounced in Eastern European countries, Janet had a life-changing experience when she went to Romania to privately adopt. During the several months she was there, she had the opportunity to visit orphanages and respond to their needs. In 1991, she and her husband adopted twin boys from an orphanage in Piatra Neamt.
Four years later when the Romanian twins were five years old, she traveled again, this time to the orphanages of Sophia, Bulgaria, where she adopted another five year old boy. With these three five year olds and their other five children, she felt her family was now complete. But the plight of the orphans left in those countries has always left a deep impression on her.
Of humanitarian work, Janet comments that she and her family are “ happiest when they are serving others.”
